City folk wanting a change and decide to relocate,
to a lovely country house, with a five bar gate.
Knowing nothing about the countryside or the country ways,
hoping their money will influence, the way that locals play.
“Hunting should be banned, with rifles, shotguns and hounds,
animals should be free, to fly and roam the ground”.
Buying their Pheasant and Venison, from Waitrose or another shop,
they think it’s killed humanely, without the firing of a single shot.
Look at all the pigeons, sitting in the trees,
throwing out some breadcrumbs, enough for a flock to feed.
Making so much mess on the washing, furniture and things,
they soon realise what pests they are, these ‘rats with wings’.
Laughing at the fox cubs, playing in the lea,
putting out some food scraps, to entice them nearer for all to see.
Turning them into pets, so they rely on people more,
hoping to make them tame, wild animals to be no more.
Eating their fresh eggs, laid by chickens in the yard,
thinking they are safe, behind that small wire guard.
With a little wooden gate, that doesn’t require a lock,
the whole thing will collapse, with just the slightest knock.
While sleeping soundly, in the middle of the night,
the family are all woken, and giving them a fright.
For a loud noise is erupting, from outside in the yard,
the chickens have had a visit, from a cute little Reynard.
Not until the daybreak, the damage can be seen,
that once sweet little fox cub, has grown into a killing machine.
No fresh eggs for breakfast, to eat with home baked bread,
the fox has done it’s business, every chicken lies dead.
