Their melody wafted through the crisp night air and a little girl rose from her sleep to stare at the glimmering stars. For a second not a sound was released and she froze at the silence, moonlight shifting her bedroom in and out of view. Then there it was again. She jumped up from her bed and quietly slipped to the window. Before her the darkness covered the sleeping land in a blanket of black. She watched intently hoping to glimpse the creatures of this song. But alas the inky shadows that cloaked the ground never surrendered even a flash of fur or a glance from their mysterious eyes. She turned her ear instead to listen. Soft yips broke the silence of the night. Seconds passed and yips and howls sounded, till as their master moved on, they faded away into nothing. With that the little girl lifted her tired head from the window sill and dropped back into bed.
But for the coyotes the night had just begun. The quiet padding of their feet barely disturbed the silence and only an occasional bark sounded through the cool air as prey was found. Clouds slid in front of the moon cutting off its light. The coyotes’ excitement rose and every muscle tensed as the prey was sighted.
Two Jack rabbits slept soundly their noses twitching to their dreams. Bodies low to the ground the coyotes began to slink forward their muscles tight and bodies lean. Their ears twitched to the night sounds and their eyes never strayed from their dinner. The grass swished and the rabbits awoke with a start, their eyes wide with fear.
Silent commands rippled through the group of hunters in the form of body language and they leapt forward as one. The flight or fight mechanism roared to life in the rabbits and they took off adrenaline pumping through their blood. The instant the rabbits took flight the coyotes were after them yipping in anticipation now that their silent cover was lifted. The rabbits dug into the dirt with their paws and veered left and right losing the coyote nipping their tail only to be greeted by another’s toothy grin. The rabbits ran on with the haunting music of the coyotes flowing around them. Their thumping hearts beat to the thunder of the coyote’s pads as they sped on into the gloom. Then an unfortunate stumble lost precious seconds and it was over.
Bones snapped and the content barks of the coyotes rippled through the sleeping country side. Soon their meal was finished. The coyotes turned away and padded back into the darkness till all that was left of their presence was their melody of the night.
Upon her moonlit bed the little girl smiled in her sleep as their joyful song slipped into her dreams.
I’m the little girl :) and i love the sound of the coyotes as they wander the dark countryside
