Hi Paul. Thanks for all your comments! To answer your question… Sometimes I vary colour for a shoot, if I want to imply different moods (high contrast B/W equals drama, normal B/W might equal mediocrity, colour if there’s some life I want to get across, and saturated colour if I’m going into the emotional surreal). But sometimes the location dictates what the mood should be. For example, also in this series I shot inside a 70’s caravan where everything was orange and brown! So you just can’t avoid shooting THAT in colour! :) - Darryl.
Perfect response… love your thought process – appreciate an insight into your world of images. Agree with the 70s caravan way of thinking – you just have to capture those oranges and browns. Lovin’ your work!
Hey Darryl, your images are just embeded in my head… lovin’ the work you do… What’s your rationale for the naked women married up to these desloate scenes etc…
Hi Paul. Great that the work’s staying with you. That’s what I think art at least should be about… an affect on the observer.
I guess each series of shots has it’s different raison d’ĂȘtre. There’s usually a story I’m trying to create or a social comment I’m trying to get across to a viewer.
I use the nude for a number of reasons. It’s generally timless, it seems to me to be the human “constant”, and also it gives you a head start in immediately provoking a response. And of course the nude has been used in art for centuries, so I’m just doing it again but trying to recreate it afresh.
The backgrounds I use speak of decay and rebirth, and the continual cycle of us within. Some are surreal… some are about loss. Some are there because of linear perspective and repetition (but then that ties in with the cycle of life again).
But I can’t separate mood from model from background. I mean, I think if I get it right , it all has to add up as one complete image, all in balance.
If you have a look at my profile, I write about the work a little more there.
Hope that answers your question. I could rave on, but maybe one day when I exhibit again I’ll have the proper plaform to do that! :)

Great shot – love the texture… and balance of all the elements…
Question: Is it hard to choose when to present on b/w or colour? When do you know?
