Photographing Sheldon Reynolds In Winter Conditions by

Photographer Mark Van Scyoc was very busy photographing the Sheldon Reynolds waterfall when I candidly caught him doing what he does so well. We were both having a great time shooting every landmark or interesting frozen formation that caught our attention in the wintry glen.

Sheldon Reynolds is located on Kitchen Creek along the lower falls trail in Ricketts Glen State Park, between the Murray Reynolds and Harrison Wright waterfalls. This spot is a fairly short distance below the Waters Meet point, near the middle of the park.

The image was captured hand-held with a Canon 5D Full Frame DSLR camera through a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L professional lens. The focal length was set to 40mm. The shutter speed was 1/160th of a second @ f/9. The camera’s ISO was set to 400. This shot is “straight from the camera” with no post processing.

Mark was also shooting with a Canon camera, a EOS 5D MK II, through a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L lens. That made it very convenient for us to be able to swap lenses when a specific shot required a longer or wider focal range.

This series of Ricketts Glen waterfall photographs were captured on December 31st, 2012, during an 8 hour winter hike & shoot with photographer Mark Van Scyoc. Twelve of the twenty-two famous “named” waterfalls in the park were visited during this trip.

Ricketts Glen is located near the small rural village of Red Rock, PA, at the junction of Pennsylvania State Routes 118 and 487. The park is about midway between Williamsport and Wilkes Barre Pennsylvania, in the north eastern region of the USA.

WARNING: Ricketts Glen waterfall trails are extremely dangerous in the winter months! They are closed to the public from late November unit spring. Winter hiking is only permitted if you are a well-equipped hiker with previous icy condition hiking or climbing experience. Each climber must register and sign in before entering the trails and must also sign out after the hike. Crampons, Ice axes and climbing ropes are absolutely required. This is NOT just a “walk in the park”.

Hello, My name is Gene. I live in the Susquehanna river valley (West Branch), in the mountains of north central Pennsylvania. I strive to produce photographic images that are simply “true” to the subject, usually with minimal post processing. If something is beautiful or interesting enough to deserve a viewer’s attention, it justifies being captured just as it is …or as close to reality as possible.

Excellent shot of the shooter, Gene! And his red hat adds the crowning touch, so to speak. The frozen falls ain’t bad either….

  • Thanks, Sheila! Mark was wearing a spelunker’s helmet because he was shooting lots of big ice formations from the back side. He spent a lot of this day in shallow caves and behind waterfall overhangs that had huge icicles across their openings. Fortunately, he didn’t accidentally waken any bears.

    Kindest regards,

    Gene
