Gulf Fritillary Butterfly Sipping Nectar by

The photo was taken on September 13th, 2012 with a Canon EOS 30D, through a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro lens. The aperture was set to f/2.8 with a shutter speed of 1/2000 sec.

The butterfly was captured on Emerald Isle …just off the mainland shores of southern North Carolina, USA. This a Gulf Fritillary Butterfly, a non-migratory relative of the Monarch and Queen species, with the scientific name of “Agraulis vanillae”. Larger View allows you to get a good look at the butterfly’s unusual face, antennae and fully extended proboscis.

Hello, My name is Gene. I live in the Susquehanna river valley (West Branch), in the mountains of north central Pennsylvania. I strive to produce photographic images that are simply “true” to the subject, usually with minimal post processing. If something is beautiful or interesting enough to deserve a viewer’s attention, it justifies being captured just as it is …or as close to reality as possible.
