This guy is one of the best friends a gardener can have …a hungry Praying Mantis. They do no harm to plants (or people, for that matter), but they love to dine on the nasty insects that like to ravage our precious plants and flowers.

This Mantis was found in my next door neighbor’s flower garden, just before sunset. The creature was quite cooperative, posing nearly motionless for several minutes as I took a bunch of macro shots.

This macro photo was captured on August 30th, 2011 in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. It was taken with a Canon EOS 10D through a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM 1:1 Macro prime lens. The shutter speed was 1/8th sec at f/8. The camera’s ISO was set to 400. A Manfrotto tripod and “pistol grip” head were also used.

Hello, My name is Gene. I live in the Susquehanna river valley (West Branch), in the mountains of north central Pennsylvania. I strive to produce photographic images that are simply “true” to the subject, usually with minimal post processing. If something is beautiful or interesting enough to deserve a viewer’s attention, it justifies being captured just as it is …or as close to reality as possible.

What a gorgeous bit of Greenery amongst the greenery. Love his/her purplish highlights. A beauty, &, as you say, a precious member of the garden group. Glad to see you, Gene!

  • Thanks a bunch, Sheila! I was away for a while, but I’m back on “the Bubble” now. Yes, my neighbor and I both thought this critter looked a bit unusual in color, not nearly as green as the one she showed me last fall. He (she?) liked having his picture taken, though. Our friends had put out four mantis egg pods in the spring and gave me one to put in our back yard too. Now the alien insects that evaded the birds are showing up as adults in our gardens.

    Best wishes,

    Gene

:-) this is a great picture!

  • Thank you very kindly, Sue! I’m so glad that you let me know that this guy was just waiting to have his picture taken last night. I’m thrilled that my camera started working again. Believe it or not, this is the first Praying Mantis I ever captured with my digital camera.

    Best wishes,

    Amazing macro work!

  • Thank you very much, Béla! He was a real pleasure to shoot. Except for the occasional turning of his head, he was nearly motionless while I snapped away.

    Kindest regards,

    Gene
