Get Out The Big Ol' Fryin' Pan, Honey! by

I love tomatoes …I especially enjoy eating the home grown tomatoes from our little backyard garden. When the fruit fully ripens on the vine (yes, they are technically considered fruit, not vegetables), the flavor is so intense that there is no comparison to the ones you buy at the supermarket.

However, I am a certifiable fool for the unripened green tomatoes that you see here …when they are miraculously transformed into the Fried Green Tomatoes that are the stuff of yee-haw culinary legend.

My wife slices each green tomato very carefully and then dusts each precious slice in her super-secret corn meal coating. Now for the best part …out comes that big heavy cast iron frying pan. This is where all that southern-fried magic happens, when the tomato slices start to sizzle briskly in the pan. Home cooked eating just doesn’t get any better than this!

This photo was captured with a Canon EOS 10D camera with a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM prime lens. The shutter speed was at 1/60th second with an aperture of f/4.5. The camera’s ISO was set to 100. A Manfrotto tripod was used with a Manfrotto 222 head.

Great capture and interesting reading. I have never eaten green tomatoes…

  • Thanks a lot, Joy! It’s a bit of an acquired taste, but I was raised on fried green tomatoes. In the States, the dish is considered to be a “southern thing” …something only hillbillies would eat.

Everyone should try fried green tomatoes at least once in their lives. If you ever get the chance, give them a try.

    Kindest regards,

    Gene

What gorgeous detail and color, beautiful Gene!

  • Thanks, Glenn! Sometimes I just can’t wait for our tomatoes to get ripe …and my southern roots take over. LOL

    Best regards,

What gorgeous green hues, Gene. And an appealing composition (although eating a green tomato doesn’t appeal as much—yet).

  • Thanks very much, Jan! Fried green tomatoes are so good, a movie was named after the dish. It might be worth a try sometime …ya never know.

    Kindest regards,

    Gene

Awhhhhhhh yes fried green tomatoe heaven…made my mouth water Gene…nice pic, and write. I just ate my last one off the vine last week :((

  • Thanks a bunch, Carolyn! We’ve been enjoying the green tomatoes so much that we have had less ripe ones to eat usual this rear. My wife really knows how to fry ’em up to perfection!
