Winter Afternoon At Oneida Falls by

Oneida Waterfall is located near the very top the Falls Trail, just below Mohawk Falls on the Ganoga Glen trail Ricketts Glen State Park. This is the second waterfall you will encounter from the Lake Rose parking area. It only takes about 15 minutes to reach this beautiful site. Even though it said March on the calendar, the signs of winter were still prevalent here.

Ricketts Glen State Park is located at the junction of RT-118 and RT 487 in north eastern Pennsylvania, USA. Red Rock is the nearest town, which is about half way between Williamsport and Wilkes Barre, PA. The “Waterfall Loop” in Ricketts Glen is often sited as the most beautiful hiking trail in all of Pennsylvania.

This photo was taken on the morning of March 2nd, 2011 on a winter hike with Kevin Hart. The image was captured with a Canon EOS 10D DSLR camera, through a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L lens at the 17mm focal length. The shutter speed was 1/125th sec at f/4. The camera’s ISO was set to 800. A light Bilora Super-Biloret tripod was used with a Bogen head.

Hello, My name is Gene. I live in the Susquehanna river valley (West Branch), in the mountains of north central Pennsylvania. I strive to produce photographic images that are simply “true” to the subject, usually with minimal post processing. If something is beautiful or interesting enough to deserve a viewer’s attention, it justifies being captured just as it is …or as close to reality as possible.

Gorgeous!!!! Was out today doing some of these, but no where near as pretty as this! Wonderfully done, Gene, and LOVE that light on the pool. i want to go!

  • Thanks a big bunch, Maureen! Anytime you want to go on a shoot here, your personal guide (me) is willing to show you be best that this beautiful place has to offer. My offer is always open. I will use any excuse I can find to get back in the Glen as often as possible!

    Kindest wishes,

    Gene

Another stunning photo, Gene! I WILL be making a trip to Ricketts Glen someday- it’s beautiful!!

  • Thank you so kindly, Jill! I was very fortunate, the lighting was just perfect for this scene. I actually gasped as I was approaching this spot. It was so beautiful there, all I had to do was to capture it before another cloud shadow spoiled the brilliant sunlight.

I can assure you, a trip to Ricketts Glen is well worth the effort it takes to get there.

    Best wishes,

    Gene

Oh what a beautiful winter scene! There is something magical about waterfalls to start with and then when transformed by winter, they are just amazing! Great shot!

  • Thank you very much, Joanne! You are preaching to the choir here …I’m a waterfall fanatic to the core. I have wanted to do a shoot here in winter for many years. A new friend and I finally worked out arrangements to hike there, and I’m so glad we did.

I’m really happy you like the results!

    Kindest regards,

    Gene

What a delightful image!!! I’d love to see this exact place taken at all the seasons of the year :-)

  • Thank you very kindly, Rusty! I just so happens that I have photos of this waterfall that I shot in three of the four seasons so far. However, the other two photos could not be taken from this exact location. I was actually standing on an ice shelf when I shot this view. Obviously, that wouldn’t be easy to do in the warmer months. Haha

I do have another shot titled Delaware Falls In Ganoga Glen that was taken last May. I was standing on a rock, just to the right of this view. It is currently posted on RedBubble right now. It can be found in my RB “Collection”, titled “Ricketts Glen Tour”.

I have been working for two years on a complete set of Ricketts Glen waterfall photographs, as seen in every season. I am getting very close to completing that project.

    Best wishes,

    Gene

  • Oh, I just found my October photo of Delaware falls

I know I have a mid-summer shot of this site somewhere, too. If I find it, I’ll post it.

…your wish is my command! Haha!

Really like the lighting in this one Gene, nice the way you kept some movement in the water too. I think this really works in this shot more than just silky water would have.

  • Thank you very much, Tim! Wednesday was an incredible day in the Glen. It was warm with blue skies, but there were lots of big puffy clouds floating by overhead. We just waited until the light was best for each shot. We got a great range of lighting conditions, from full sun to very diffused light, for almost every scene we shot.

I’m definitely doing this hike again next winter. I hope we can schedule a time that will allow you to make it too.

    It was unforgettable!

    Best regards,

    Gene
