Capturing The Greatness of Ganoga! by

This 2011 image is dedicated to the nature photographers who were all geared-up and ready to climb the waterfall ice in 2012 …the “year without a winter”.

Recent RedBubble “convert”, Kevin Hart (murph2010) is lining up a shot in the freezing cold spray of Ganoga waterfall …all ninety-four feet of it! I caught the wilderness photographer in action at the biggest waterfall in Ricketts Glen State Park.

During the planning stages of our trip, Kevin requested (insisted?) that this site be included in our route through the Glen. You got your wish, Kevin …and I’m so glad you did. It was an incredible place to see in late winter!

Please, use “View Larger” for this one!

Ricketts Glen is located at the junction of RT-118 and RT 487 in Fairmount Township, Pennsylvania, USA. The nearest town is Red Rock, PA, about half way between Williamsport and Wilkes Barre, PA.

This photo was taken on March 2nd, 2011 on a winter hike along the Ganoga Glen Falls Trail in Ricketts Glen State Park. It was shot with a Canon EOS 10D DSLR camera, through a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L lens at the 23mm focal length. The shutter speed was 1/15th sec at f/9.5. The camera’s ISO was 400. A light Bilora Super-Biloret tripod was used with a Bogen head. A remote shutter release cable was also employed.

Your comments are always welcome! Constructive criticism is appreciated.

Hello, My name is Gene. I live in the Susquehanna river valley (West Branch), in the mountains of north central Pennsylvania. I strive to produce photographic images that are simply “true” to the subject, usually with minimal post processing. If something is beautiful or interesting enough to deserve a viewer’s attention, it justifies being captured just as it is …or as close to reality as possible.

Nice! I love it!! Really gives the waterfall scale, doesn’t it??

  • Thanks, Kevin! You in the shot gave such perfect definition to the size of the falls. That was exactly what prompted me to do process this shot right away. I just got my first chance to go through all of my shots today. When I saw this one, I knew I had to post it immediately.

You are the intripid wilderness photographer!

(Oh, I added a writeup to the posting.)

    Best regards,

    Gene

  • Thanks, Linmarie! I uploaded this shot in a hurry, to show Kevin the picture of him at work. I went back and added the appropriate text a short time ago.

This is Ganoga Waterfall in Ricketts Glen State Park, in north eastern Pennsylvania.

This really makes me wish I had caught a few with you in it… that scale factor really makes a big difference in my opinion!

  • You are so right, having you in the shot makes this a much better image than my other photo of Ganoga. I often say “I don’t shoot people”, that may have to change.

WOW!!! This is STUNNING! What a magical treasure; glad you added to this to your route; awesome!

  • Thank you, Terri-Lynn! I’m glad we did, too. It turned out to be the best possible trail to take.

    Kindest wishes,

Great shot of the youngster!.. Brave guy to be that close and standing on ice!..A great image of the falls!..
  • Thank you so much, Dennis! He was very brave, but wise, too. He tested the ice at that spot very carefully before setting up the tripod. He’s a great guy and was the perfect hiking partner on this trip. We both got to put our new crampons to the ultimate test on this great day in the icy wilds of PA.

    Kindest regards,

    Gene

Excellent Shot! It really helps to have someone in the image to give perspective of the size of Ganoga

  • Thank you very kindly, Mark! I totally agree with you …my other shot of Ganoga looks so small without that human frame of reference in the foreground.

This was my first winter waterfall shoot. I’ve had lots of mountaineering experience, but I hadn’t done a winter hike in many, many years. I will definitely do this much more often, especially now that I have the right gear.

    All my best,

    Gene

WOW!!!! Ok that’s it. I’m getting my gear for next year! Maybe Mark will too!!!

  • No question, I will definitely do this again. It would be great to have a small group of experienced mountaineers to make this winter trek next year. Gather up your crampons, ice axes, ropes and carabiners and let’s do it!

    Kindest wishes,

    Gene
