Winter's Retreat at Murray Reynolds Falls by

The morning of March 2nd found winter slowly retreating in the lower section of Ricketts Glen State Park. Kevin Hart, my hiking partner for the day, had been here a few weeks ago and found this spot completely frozen over. Heavy rains and warmer temperatures were allowing the brisk flow of Kitchen Creek to become visible again.

Murray Reynolds Waterfall is the first named falls you see when you are hiking up the Falls Trail in Ricketts Glen State Park. On an early March morning, the ice was beginning to melt to reveal a strong runoff from the mountains above.

Be Warned …this winter hike is not just a “walk in the park”. Please, do NOT attempt to do this unless you have good crampons, rope and proper mountaineering gear! You must sign-in on an official log and sign-out after you complete your hike. We also registered our plans with the PA Parks Commision prior to making our trip. Seriously, this is a very icy, dangerous trek to attempt without careful planning, previous experience and the right equipment.

Ricketts Glen is located at the junction of RT-118 and RT 487 in Fairmount Township, Pennsylvania, USA. The nearest town is Red Rock, PA, about half way between Williamsport and Wilkes Barre, PA.

This photo was was captured with a Canon EOS 10D DSLR camera, through a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L lens at the 20mm focal length. The shutter speed was 1/30th sec at f/8. The camera’s ISO was 400. A Bilora Super-Biloret tripod was used with a Bogen head. A remote shutter release cable was also employed.

Hello, My name is Gene. I live in the Susquehanna river valley (West Branch), in the mountains of north central Pennsylvania. I strive to produce photographic images that are simply “true” to the subject, usually with minimal post processing. If something is beautiful or interesting enough to deserve a viewer’s attention, it justifies being captured just as it is …or as close to reality as possible.

Well Gene, it looks like you finally got a satisfactory shot of Murray Reynolds! I like this quite a bit.. the wide angle, the colors, the diffused light. However, I must point out that Kevin Hall wasn’t hiking with you… Kevin Hart was though! :)

  • Oops, sorry about that, Mr. Hart! Duly noted and corrected.

What a great day it was, my friend. I would do that trek again with you anytime. You were the perfect hiking partner for this adventure.

I can’t wait to see some your shots on RB!

    Kindest regards,
