Early March Morning At Sheldon Reynolds Falls (as-is) by

Sheldon Reynolds Waterfall is the second named falls you see when you hike up the Falls Trail in Ricketts Glen State Park. On an early March morning, the ice was beginning to melt to revealing a strong runoff from the mountains above.

Ricketts Glen is located at the junction of RT-118 and RT 487 in Fairmount Township, Pennsylvania, USA. The nearest town is Red Rock, PA, about half way between Williamsport and Wilkes Barre, PA.

This photo was taken on March 2nd, 2011 on a winter hike with Kevin Hart. It was shot with a Canon EOS 10D DSLR camera, through a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L lens at the 23mm focal length. The shutter speed was 1/125th sec at f/8. The camera’s ISO was 400. A Bilora Super-Biloret tripod was used with a Bogen head. A remote shutter release cable was also employed.

This photo is untouched, straight from the camera.

Hello, My name is Gene. I live in the Susquehanna river valley (West Branch), in the mountains of north central Pennsylvania. I strive to produce photographic images that are simply “true” to the subject, usually with minimal post processing. If something is beautiful or interesting enough to deserve a viewer’s attention, it justifies being captured just as it is …or as close to reality as possible.

Wow this is amazing, Gene. Just lovely work!

  • Thanks, Maureen! I have wanted to shoot the waterfalls in Ricketts Glen under winter conditions for may years. I was finally able to put together a serious hike there, while most of the snow and ice were still decorating the scenery. It was an excellent adventure that I’ll never forget.

I’m so glad you like this shot! It’s one of my few “straight from the camera” photos from the Glen.

    Kindest wishes,

    Gene

Great shot! It looks like the sunlight was really working for you here.. great wide angle view, composition, and light!

  • Thank you very much, Kevin! It was great the way the sunlight was changing continuously. I got a lot of very different looking shots here, depending upon the position of the clouds at the moment I fired the shutter.

Oh, I’ve added links to your RB page.

    Kindest regards,

    Gene

    Very beautiful scenery Gene!!!

  • Thank you so kindly, Lori!

Kevin Hart (Murph2010) and I had a fantastic hike through the Glen yesterday. The weather conditions were gorgeous, but it was still a very challenging trek. We were so glad that we had prepared properly for this trip.

Thick ice on the steepest sections of the trail were fairly difficult to traverse without slipping. We were extremely pleased that we were able to complete our climb, all the way to the top, without a single slip or fall.

I want everyone to know that the park’s posted winter warnings are absolutely appropriate and accurate. Without crampons and mountaineering gear, it would be nearly impossible to make it through safely.

…But, I’d do it again in a NY minute!

I will definitely plan another winter trip there next year, but I’ll try to get the word out a little sooner. It would be great if a few more (well prepared) people could come along. The experience was truly amazing.

    Best wishes,

    Gene
