Son of Boris by Gene Walls

I got my best macro lens back into service yesterday, after finding some alarming signs of fungus growth behind the front glass. It appears to be OK now, so I went looking for a suitable subject to put the lens to the real world test.

Last year, on about the same date in early fall, I took a lot of photos of a spider near my front porch. I called that guy “Boris” (after the 60’s song by The Who).

This appears to be the exact same species of arachnid, so I think I’ll call him “Son of Boris”. He was found not too far from where I had originally spotted his “daddy” last autumn.

I think this is a common Brown Spider (Neoscona crucifera). If any viewer can confirm or correct this ID, please let me know.

This macro photo was captured on September 24th, 2010, with a Canon EOS 10D using a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro prime lens. The shutter speed was 1/125th second at f/16. A Manfrotto tripod was used with a Manfrotto 222 ball head. A wireless remote shutter release was also employed. No flash or artificial lighting were used.

Hello, My name is Gene. I live in the Susquehanna river valley (West Branch), in the mountains of north central Pennsylvania. I strive to produce photographic images that are simply “true” to the subject, usually with minimal post processing. If something is beautiful or interesting enough to deserve a viewer’s attention, it justifies being captured just as it is …or as close to reality as possible.

Great capture of a really cool spider!!! Glad to hear about your macro lens as well…I’d feel lost without mine.

  • Thanks a lot, Tim!

As to the lens, there was no “etching” in the glass or the coatings, just a bit of discoloration on the inner surface of the front element. I sure hope the fungus is gone for good. I’ll be even more careful from now on.

If I can end up with fungus inside my lens, it can truly happen to anyone. I have been very aware of this potential problem for a very long time, but I still experienced it, despite my awareness and regular lens inspections. I’m glad I decided to check all of my glass after I wrote that little tutorial on the subject.

    Kindest regards,

    Gene

ha ha ha we alway call them Boris also. Great capture.

  • Thanks, Joy! “Boris The Spider” was a popular song (before your day, I’m sure). The title still sticks in a lot of people’s minds, though. That makes it a great spider name, even today.

    Kindest wishes,

    Gene
