When I was very young, my parents took my sister and me on an adventure that I would never forget. We took a day trip to the “Greater Pittsburgh Airport”. We weren’t flying anywhere, that would have been completely beyond our very meager means. We were there to experience a big city airport …and all of those amazing airplanes.

While we were there, our parents herded my little sister and me into an automated photo booth. This is the photograph that dropped from a slot on the side of that fancy picture machine, back in the summer of 1956.

My family lived in Reedsville, West Virginia at the time. This is a memento of the first time I had ever visited the state of Pennsylvania …and a real big city airport!

Hello, My name is Gene. I live in the Susquehanna river valley (West Branch), in the mountains of north central Pennsylvania. I strive to produce photographic images that are simply “true” to the subject, usually with minimal post processing. If something is beautiful or interesting enough to deserve a viewer’s attention, it justifies being captured just as it is …or as close to reality as possible.

What a lovely image! Wonderful memories :-))

  • It was a very special day for me. This picture does help to bring back some faded memories of that trip. It seems so mundane now, but it was a big adventure to an awestruck five year old boy.

    Best regards,

    Gene

Daunting, ain’t it? You look awestruck; a good thing for a little fellow at a big-city airport! Another wonderful posting.

  • “Awestruck” is the perfect word, Sheila! It was such an innocent time but I was a very curious kid, soaking in the entire new world around me. I was seeing so many things and people that were so different from what I had ever known before that day. It had a real impact on that little boy in the picture.

    Kindest regards,

    Gene
