Just A Dusting On The Farmhouse by

Another return trip to the Forgotten Farmhouse on a very cold winter day.

This photo was taken with a Canon EOS 10D DSLR camera through a Canon EF 35-350mm f/3.5-5.6L telephoto zoom lens @ 150mm focal length. The shutter speed was 1/180th sec at f/16. The camera’s ISO was set to 100. A Manfrotto tripod was used with a Manfrotto “pistol-grip” head.

Hello, My name is Gene. I live in the Susquehanna river valley (West Branch), in the mountains of north central Pennsylvania. I strive to produce photographic images that are simply “true” to the subject, usually with minimal post processing. If something is beautiful or interesting enough to deserve a viewer’s attention, it justifies being captured just as it is …or as close to reality as possible.

So beautiful and yet kind of sad that this house has been left to decay. The snow scene is so beautiful. It is such a large two story house. I can imagine that children and adults have looked out of those windows at every season. Played on the landscape, sat on the porch under the shade of the trees. So happy that you took the time to take the seasons. Wonderful work my friend. Merry Christmas.

  • Thank you very much, Wanda! Your extremely thoughtful comment really means a lot to me. I am thrilled that enjoyed seeing all of the season changes at that old farmhouse!

    My best Christmas wishes,

    Gene

Great POV, Gene…. this is my first view of a familiar photo of others, and I am enjoying the view…. how beautiful ….. and a disappointment only in that this old farmhouse is un-inhabited!!!!!
    Brenda

  • Thank you so much, Brenda! Fifteen months ago this unusual place became an obsession to me (a healthy obsession, thought, honestly). I am very pleased that you like the view.

The new owners are an Amish family, and as far as I can tell, they only use this house for storage. I am just so pleased that they didn’t tear the house down to make more planting space in their field. It’s way better to simply be un-inhabited than for it to be totally gone. Right?

    Best Holiday wishes,

    Gene

Beautiful shot! What a great fixer upper! As the wife of a builder, renovationist, this is a challenge!

  • Thank you very much, Maryann! This place would be an enormous challenge, indeed! The house has no services, no running water, no electricity, no telephone… or anything. There isn’t even a driveway to approach the place. I think it makes a much better photography subject than it would ever make as a home again.

The new owners of this farm have built a brand new house and a huge barn close by. They are Amish, so the new home has no “modern conveniences” either, but it is really a beautiful place. I’m just glad that they have chosen to leave this old farmhouse standing in the middle of their field! (for me to shoot!)

    All my best,

    Gene
