Unadorned Christmas Farmhouse by

There is nobody living in the “Forgotten Farmhouse” anymore. No families have lived here for many, many years. No one is there to decorate for Christmas… but it still stands in the middle of the field, unadorned for all these years.

This photograph was taken in December of 2009. The “Forgotten Farmhouse” is located east of Clarkstown in north central Pennsylvania, USA. The shot was captured from Upper Bartlow Road, where it meets Ridge Lane in Lycoming County.

This photo was shot with a Canon EOS 10D DSLR camera through a Canon EF 35-350mm f/3.5-5.6L telephoto zoom lens at the 100mm focal length. The shutter speed was 1/60th sec at f/16. The camera’s ISO was set to 100. A Manfrotto tripod was used with a remote shutter release.

Hello, My name is Gene. I live in the Susquehanna river valley (West Branch), in the mountains of north central Pennsylvania. I strive to produce photographic images that are simply “true” to the subject, usually with minimal post processing. If something is beautiful or interesting enough to deserve a viewer’s attention, it justifies being captured just as it is …or as close to reality as possible.

Looks so sad and lonely.. especially when you narrate it that way… still.. something so beautiful about it

  • I was actually going for “pathos”, more than just sadness in my text. Hey, this place makes me joyful to the core, just by its mere presence!

…there is an odd shade of sadness there, mostly when I think about the people who once called this place “home”.

    I wax way to philosophical…

    My best,

    Gene

I really like the way you have the green pine in the forgound….Not only empty, but I notice not even a road…..it’s been a long long time. Di

  • Thank you very much, Di!

The tree was across the road from the farm. I had used that tree for shade on a few hot summer days, but I never included it in the shot before. I saw the snow sticking to the branches and knew that I wanted to push the DOF to the limit, to try to get both the tree and the farmhouse in good focus. I was happy that it worked out OK.

    My best,

    Gene

Would this be the Christmas Tree on its way to brighten the old place’s holiday??

  • This tree isn’t going anywhere, Shelia. It’s growing in front of somebody’s home, directly across the dirt road from the farm. That home has a HUGE window facing the old farmhouse. That lucky homeowner gets to see this beautiful view every single day!!!

Fortunately, she is an incredibly nice person who is willing to put up with a crazy old photographers dragging his camera gear across her beautiful lawn every few weeks! LOL!

    Best wishes,

    Gene

I absolutely love how you framed this photo.

If I lived in that area, I would make it a special purpose to go out and decorate that old barn for Christmas, even if no one saw it. Just to give it even more life than it has in this photo.

  • Thank you very much, Jonathan! I haven’t been out to this place for a while, but I heard that the house was going to be torn down. In fact, it might be gone already.

I spent over a year and a half photographing this farmhouse every month, specifically for a calendar called The Forgotten Farmhouse . I will certainly miss the old place. I’m afraid the chance to decorate the house has passed.

    Kindest regards,

    Gene
