Windy & Overcast October Pennsylvania View by

It was so windy today that many of the trees had been stripped bare of their leaves, before they even had a chance to show their bright autumn colors. It seemed like winter was loudly announcing its early arrival!

The turbulent gray clouds were totally obscuring the sunset tonight and the lighting was very “flat”. At least the farmer’s fields were still displaying their beautiful fall colors as darkness of night was quickly approaching.

The abandoned farmhouse proudly stands in the middle of the farmer’s field, weathering another season, as it has for over a century.

Farmland in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, USA

This photo was was shot using a Canon EOS 10D camera with a Canon EF 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM zoom lens. The focal length was zoomed to 95mm. The “averaged” shutter speed was 1/90th sec. at f/5.6. The camera’s ISO was set to 400. A Manfrotto tripod was used. This is an HDR image, comprised of three exposures, processed in PhotoMatrix Pro 3.2 for Mac.

Hello, My name is Gene. I live in the Susquehanna river valley (West Branch), in the mountains of north central Pennsylvania. I strive to produce photographic images that are simply “true” to the subject, usually with minimal post processing. If something is beautiful or interesting enough to deserve a viewer’s attention, it justifies being captured just as it is …or as close to reality as possible.

Excellent capture and Beautiful scene!! Would love to have that old house!! Adding this to my favorites…

  • Thank you very much, Wanda-Lynn! It is a beautiful old farmhouse, but it has truly been ravaged by time and neglect. I just noticed that the second chimney has crumbled to the ground since the spring of this year. It has been abandoned for many years, but it still has quite a “charm” to it.

I really appreciate your very kind comment, and especially for your generous “Fav”!

    Best wishes,

    Gene

I knew it :-) Lovely work, Gene! yes yes, an Oh Gene moment…… redux squared.

  • Thanks so much, Maureen! The flat lighting prompted me to try HDR to bring the image to life. As you know, I’m not really big on heavy processing, but I was pleased with how PhotoMatrix worked on this image.

Another month is checked off of my “countdown to calendar” list.

    Most gratefully,

    Gene

Oh, Wow, Love it. You captured the beauty of the changing season. You need to put all of the seasons together and make a calander.

  • Thank you, Wanda! Yes, that is exactly what I am doing! I am making a calendar! I have been shooting this same farmhouse in every month, for well over a year now. Unfortunately I missed a couple of months last year (including April) so I won’t be finished until the spring of next year. How intuitive of you to notice what I was doing here! I am so thankful for your kind support!

    Most gratefully,

    Gene

Fabulous landscape and here too the leaves are falling before changing colours because of the very dry weather we have.

  • Thank you very much, Poupoune! We had the opposite problem here. We had the “summer without a summer”. There was a lot of rain, nearly every weekend, with no hot dry season at all. Somehow, it has had the same effect as a very dry summer. The leaves are falling without turning to beautiful colors first. Oh, well, that’s just how it goes sometimes.

    Best wishes,

    Gene

What a wonderful image I love all the different colors, lines and patterns

  • Thank you very much, Debbie! I was out there shooting two days in a row and was shocked that the leaves on all but one of the trees near the farmhouse had lost their leaves, before they had a chance to turn color. That literally happened in one day! The wind was gusting to 50 mph, quite rare for this area.

You are so right, the colorful patterns in the fields are really wonderful to see!

    Gene
