What On Earth Were We Doing At 2:30am? by

You are looking at the result of a fun collaborative effort. A lovely young family friend was leaving our home, very late on a Sunday night, at the very end of summer. She noticed the beautiful lighting effect of the traffic lights in a very heavy fog down the street. She ran back inside, very giddy, and asked if she could borrow a camera right away. I quickly handed her my wife’s Canon DSLR and she was out the door in a flash. Then I grabbed my own camera & tripod, and followed her outside at 2:30 AM, to see if one of us could capture the moment that got her so excited.

Suddenly, the city police drove by and thought we looked a bit “out of place”, so they stopped to have a talk with us… (I should have said “talk to her”, she’s very attractive!)

Satisfied that we weren’t causing any trouble, the officer asked if we would prefer the light to change to red. “Sure!”, we said. The two patrolmen drove around the block, tripped the automatic traffic light sensor and then turned off their headlamps so they wouldn’t ruin the shot.

As the officers pulled away, one of then said “…to protect and serve!”

Special THANKS to Karley! This is the vision that she wanted to remember.

This photo was taken with a Canon EOS 10D with a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Prime lens. The shutter speed was 1/6th sec at f/4, no flash. The camera’s ISO was set to 1,600. A Manfrotto tripod was used. The photo is straight from the camera, as-is.

This shot was captured at the corner of High Street and 7th Avenue, in the city of Williamsport, Pennsylvania, USA.

Hello, My name is Gene. I live in the Susquehanna river valley (West Branch), in the mountains of north central Pennsylvania. I strive to produce photographic images that are simply “true” to the subject, usually with minimal post processing. If something is beautiful or interesting enough to deserve a viewer’s attention, it justifies being captured just as it is …or as close to reality as possible.

yeah, what!? I love that you did this, Gene. Wonder if they felt the same!

  • I can’t say too much, for legal reasons… (LOL)

I’ll only say; 2:30am last night, a bit foggy, a beautiful young lady, a camera, nobody went to jail.

Just gotta shake things up sometimes.

Great shot Gene! When you go to Devil’s tower watch out for that pink lightening that shoots up out of the ground!!! Yes, I have witnessess! take care, Linda

  • Thanks a lot, Linda! Wow, I’ll bet it was really something seeing that pink colored lightning! That sounds incredible! I wonder if it’s the color of the dust that makes the lightning look pink. ???

I’m not actually going to Wyoming anytime soon. It was just a reference to the movie that was mentioned earlier. Although, I really would love to visit Wyoming some day. It’s one of the few States I haven’t been to yet.

    Best wishes,

How nice of them……maybe you can get it put in the paper with a note as to how accomidating they were……but then I think the picture would be b & w in the paper and there for not the same. Thanks for the great explanation…………how fun.

  • Thanks! That’s a great idea, but I would fear that the officers might catch some flack from the Chief for it. We’ll just give a nice color print to the officers instead, just in case.
