Summer Morning At Adams Falls by

Adams Falls is the first named waterfall at the very bottom of the gorge in Ricketts Glen State Park. This is where I began my summer hike to the top of the glen on Saturday morning. What a beautiful place to start a perfect day of enjoying the incredible wonders of nature!

This image was captured in Ricketts Glen State Park, in the north eastern region of Pennsylvania. This gorgeous spot can be found just a few yards south of the bridge on RT 118 (near the village of Red Rock). It’s just a stones throw away from the park’s “Evergreen Parking Lot”. This is the easiest waterfall for the public to reach within the park.

A Canon EOS 10D DSLR body, fitted with a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L Zoom lens was used. The lens was set to its widest focal length of 17mm. The camera’s shutter speed was 1/45th sec at f/4.5. The camera’s ISO was set to 100. A Manfrotto tripod was used with a remote shutter release cable.

Hello, My name is Gene. I live in the Susquehanna river valley (West Branch), in the mountains of north central Pennsylvania. I strive to produce photographic images that are simply “true” to the subject, usually with minimal post processing. If something is beautiful or interesting enough to deserve a viewer’s attention, it justifies being captured just as it is …or as close to reality as possible.

You do waterfalls so well, Gene. I admit I can never quite get them as I see them. I’m looking at your settings. Learning :-)

  • Thank you so much, Maureen! Waterfalls can be a real challenge for everyone. Most of them around here tend to be in the toughest lighting settings, with lots of dark shadow zones and super bright areas within the same shot.

My best solution is to use an NG and a CP filter stacked on the lens. I also shoot a ton of frames at each site, at every possible aperture / shutter speed combination. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. What the heck, there is no way for it to be a waist of time. I still get to enjoy seeing the waterfalls, even if all of my shots turn out badly! If I get an OK picture, it’s a win / win!

    Best wishes,

    Gene

Gorgeous! I’m heading there in a few weeks!

  • That’s wonderful, Colleen! It’s a fantastic place to visit! Be sure to bring your best hiking boots, it’s a bit rough in places. I hope you like Ricketts Glen as much as I do!

    Best wishes,

Very nice Gene. I like the realistic light which I suspect may have been a challenge to accomplish.

  • Thanks, Bob! Yes, it was a bit tricky. The better part of an hour, and at least 50 frames later, I finally got one that looked OK to me. I must admit, I was cursing lots of “blow-outs” and shadows as I sorted through the images. I have attempted to photograph this particular waterfall on four separate outings. This is the first shot that made the “keeper” list.

Thank you very much for your well informed comment.

  • Thank you very much, Mike! I really appreciate that you like to see the camera settings in photo descriptions. I do that because I like to see that information included too. You are right, it can be helpful to see what settings were used.
