Rustic Stone Bridge On Highland Trail by

*This rustic simple bridge was found on the “Highland Trail” in Rickett’s Glen, over one of the small tributaries of Kitchen Creek. Four large flat stones make up the natural bridge “deck”.

Rickett’s Glen is a Pennsylvania State Park in the north eastern part of the state. Some of the hiking paths are quite steep and very rugged, especially near the waterfalls, but some of the trails are a fairly easy stroll, like the section pictured here.*

This photo was captured with a Canon EOS 10D camera body using a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L Zoom lens, at the 36mm focal length. The shutter speed was .5 sec at f/11. The camera’s ISO was set to 100. A Manfrotto, tripod was used.

Hello, My name is Gene. I live in the Susquehanna river valley (West Branch), in the mountains of north central Pennsylvania. I strive to produce photographic images that are simply “true” to the subject, usually with minimal post processing. If something is beautiful or interesting enough to deserve a viewer’s attention, it justifies being captured just as it is …or as close to reality as possible.

Excellent capture Gene, I was also walking in the woods here in London, unfortunately there are no streams, which I love. Beauty my friend. Don.

  • Thank you very kindly, Don! This photo was taken near the end of a very long nature hike, over some of the most rugged trials I have attempted for several years. This was a nice quiet respite at the end of my daytrip adventure.

    Best regards,

    Gene

It’s beautiful and looks like the perfect place to enjoy a hot sunny afternoon.

  • Thank you very much, Poupoune! It was a perfect place to rest at the end of a very long hike. It was a nice shady piece of heaven on earth!

    My best,

    Gene

Don’t you just love coming across these? really, I dont think this was taken that far from me…. as the crow flies. What’s a little state border anyway lol
    Beautiful.

  • Absolutely, yes! I do love finding a solid rustic bridge on a trail! This one was made out of all local natural stone (literally from this very spot). I consider this little bridge to be a true work of functional art!

Rickett’s Glen isn’t too far south of the NY border, it’s just west of Scranton, not too far from I-81. It would definitely be worth a visit! If you go, be sure to take you best hiking boots, you’ll need them!

    Best wishes,

    Gene

Another great capture. You must have had a great time at this park. Looks very inviting.

  • Thanks, Wanda! Yes, I had a fantastic time there. It is a very natural wilderness area, with few man-made features, mostly just some stone steps where they are really needed for safety. This little stone bridge is a perfect example of the of the simple “improvements” that have been made here. Otherwise, it’s just a rugged hike through the woods, with lots of waterfalls. It’s as close to heaven as I’ve ever seen!

    Best wishes,

    Gene

Wish I were on this path right now, Gene. I admire the way you composed this so that the path leads me into the scene and toward the light. Beautiful scene and photo!

  • Thanks, Jan! I wish I was back there too! …beats the daylights out of working!

The scene was a real exposure challenge, as you can imagine, but 20 disappointing frames or so led me to this image. This was my last shot at the end of a very long day of hiking.

I really appreciate your very thoughtful comments!

    Best wishes,

    Gene

This looks like an open invitation. :) So very peaceful..

  • I assure you, it is an open invitation. It’s a huge wilderness area that everyone should experience! You are right, this is a very “peaceful” trail. Down below, in the gorge, are the waterfall trails… they’re a bit more rough and tumble! There is something for everybody’s taste here, quietly soothing or loud and exciting!

    Your comment is much appreciated!
