No, really… George Washington actually did sleep here!

This tiny log cabin along Wills Creek, in Cumberland, Maryland was the official headquarters of (then, Lt Colonel) George Washington, from the years 1754 through 1755. The young, 22 year old, Washington commanded 150 men from this location, during the French and Indian War.

This historic treasure is located in Riverside Park, at the point where Wills Creek feeds into the north branch of the Potomac River. Riverside Park is a Cumberland City Park, operated in conjunction with Cumberland Garden Club. It is on the Maryland side of the bridge to Ridgeley, West Virginia.

One of my best friends lived within a “stone’s throw” of this historic site, during our high school days in the 60’s. I enjoyed seeing this little cabin nearly every weekday after school. It has been very respectfully preserved for all to see.

This photo was captured with a Canon EOS 10D camera with a Canon EF 28-70mm f/2.8L Macro lens at 28mm focal length. The shutter speed was 1/90th sec at f/8. The camera’s ISO was set to 400. A Manfrotto tripod was used.

Hello, My name is Gene. I live in the Susquehanna river valley (West Branch), in the mountains of north central Pennsylvania. I strive to produce photographic images that are simply “true” to the subject, usually with minimal post processing. If something is beautiful or interesting enough to deserve a viewer’s attention, it justifies being captured just as it is …or as close to reality as possible.

    Lovely capture.
It is wonderful this cabin has been restored.

  • Thanks, Brandie!

When I was much younger, I walked past this site most days after school. My good friend lived less than half a block up the street from here. The park has been been maintained in this same condition for as long as I can remember. You are absolutely right, thank goodness it has been preserved for all to see!

    Best wishes,

    Gene
