Rainbow Falls and Stone Bridge by

Believe it or not, this is not a “fantasy” image, created in a computer. This is a real photograph of a very real place! This is Rainbow Falls, in Watkins Glen State Park, located in upstate New York at the lower end of Seneca Lake. It is one of the most unbelievable places I have ever seen! I thank God and NY State for this most beautiful place in the USA!

Lush green ground vegetation and beautiful trees punctuate the enormous rock cliffs and the numerous waterfalls. Almost every surface in this section of the glen is covered in thick moss, green vines and ferns. This creates an amazing green “glow” that must be seen to be believed! All of your senses are treated to wonderful stimulations here. The sweet aroma of nature is ever present. The nearly constant sound of flowing water is like natures music that accompanies you throughout your entire hike in the gorge.

This photograph was captured with a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L lens on a Canon EOS 10D DSLR body. The aperture was f/4, shutter speed 1/15th sec at 40mm focal length. The camera & Lens were mounted on a Manfrotto tripod with a Manfrotto “joystick” ball head. A remote shutter release was used to minimize movement. No flash.

Hello, My name is Gene. I live in the Susquehanna river valley (West Branch), in the mountains of north central Pennsylvania. I strive to produce photographic images that are simply “true” to the subject, usually with minimal post processing. If something is beautiful or interesting enough to deserve a viewer’s attention, it justifies being captured just as it is …or as close to reality as possible.

Oh so pretty. Proof for those who do not live in New York, that we are more than traffic and The Big Apple.

  • Thank you so much, Maureen! You are so right! There are so many natural wonders “upstate”. I’ll take the Finger Lakes region over NYC any day!

    Best wishes,

    Gene

Very nicely done, Gene .. difficult exposure conditions. Congrats on a well-deserved feature!

  • Thank you so much, Karl! You are absolutely right about the exposure conditions. I kept coming back at different times of the day, on several trips to catch this image. I just got a set of graduated NG filters to help with similar situations in the future. This photo was taken with a UV filter alone, and I had to bracket every shot.

    I really appreciate your comment!

    Best wishes,

    Gene
