Miniature Spring Violet by Gene Walls

This diminutive violet (Viola Pratincola) is a native perennial plant that grows in northern areas in the US and southern Canada. This very tiny “weed” looks like a pail purple spot in grassy areas. Very close inspection reveals a gorgeous little “treat”. This miniscule flower is no larger than my finger nail, but a powerful macro lens reveals a gorgeous example of mother’s art! Without a magnifying lens, you would never know how beautiful this little flower really is.

This photo was taken “handheld” on May 2nd in central Pennsylvania, using a Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact-Macro lens with a Canon “Life-Size” adapter, mounted on a Canon EOS 10D camera. The shutter speed was 1/60th sec @ f/11. The camera’s ISO was set to 400. This image has been cropped slightly in height, otherwise it is untouched.

Hello, My name is Gene. I live in the Susquehanna river valley (West Branch), in the mountains of north central Pennsylvania. I strive to produce photographic images that are simply “true” to the subject, usually with minimal post processing. If something is beautiful or interesting enough to deserve a viewer’s attention, it justifies being captured just as it is …or as close to reality as possible.

Stunning Violet. I havent seen one like this before.

  • Thank you, Joy!

It is a “wild” flower, generally considered to be a common weed. They are so small, that most people never notice their incredible beauty. You have to look very, very closely to see how wonderful they really are. Unfortunately, they often go unnoticed under foot.
