This is a photo of beautiful hillside that I pass nearly every day. I could never catch a picture of this wonderful view, because there was no safe place to pull over on the highway as I was driving past.

On this particular autumn evening, all traffic was stopped in a construction zone, just as the sun had disappeared behind the mountains. The last rays of sunlight were only visible up on the hilltop to the east. Thanks to that unexpected traffic jam, I finally got the shot that I had wanted to capture for a very long time. (It really pays to keep you camera at your side at ALL times!)

This landscape image was captured from I-180, exactly on the “city line” between Montoursville and Williamsport, Pennsylvania, USA.

The photo was shot “handheld” with a Canon EOS 10D camera using a Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L zoom lens @ 200mm. The shutter speed was 1/250th sec at f/9.5. The camera’s ISO was set to 100.

Hello, My name is Gene. I live in the Susquehanna river valley (West Branch), in the mountains of north central Pennsylvania. I strive to produce photographic images that are simply “true” to the subject, usually with minimal post processing. If something is beautiful or interesting enough to deserve a viewer’s attention, it justifies being captured just as it is …or as close to reality as possible.

Glad you were able to get this shot. It is beautiful.

  • Thank you, Wanda!

I have always seen this as a sort of “mystical” idyllic location… only from afar. I guess it may be partially because I can usually only see this vision as I am returning home at the end of a long day.

Great capture Gene! I’ve been known to do a few turnarounds also!!! Worth the wait! Take care, Linda

  • Thank you so much, Linda! I took a look at your “turnaround” photo titled “Sunbeam on San Juan” and it is truly great! I really appreciate your comment!

We should all keep our cameras at arms reach as often as possible!

Gene, another fine take. I like the softness of this one. And the “lines” are inherently pleasing. I also appreciate your verbal explanations on your photos. As I read this one, it brings to mind similar personal “favorites” that I witness over and over again. Then when I do find opportunity to “capture” – what I have “seen” is still not in the photo taken. So I marvel at the scene and eventually make my family wait another time – the next time I try.

  • The fading sunlight was very diffused and it gave the scene a kind of “dreamy” softness (and it was shot handheld, too). The sunset’s shadow was very quickly working its way up the side of the hill. It was “shoot now, or loose it” time.

I can’t tell you how often my family has had their patience tested while waiting for me to catch a shot. Thank goodness, they all understand the side effects of my addiction.

    Best wishes,

    Gene

I like how this is framed , the lighting around those trees encloses the image. Well done.
  • Thank you very much, Terry! I really appreciate your kind comment!

Great shot, makes me wish I was there to go walking

  • Thank you so much, Trish! It was getting dark in the valley, but this hilltop was glowing in the last rays of sunlight. It certainly does look like a great place for a walk!

    Best wishes,

Gorgeous photo Gene, the framing is perfect. The pic looks very like a painting. Is it Orton or HDR?

  • Thanks, Garth! This is a handheld shot, taken through my windshield. The window tint had shifted the colors quite a bit. The photo was processed in PhotoMatrix Pro, using two bracketed frames (+0 & -1) of the same shot. This was done primarily to preserve definition in the clouds and to reclaim some lost detail in the shadows at the bottom of the image. I attempted to correct the color shift in PS (the sky was mostly green, due to shooting through the window tint).

    Sincerely,

    Gene
