I captured this candid portrait of Sarah Palin during a rally at Bowman Field in Williamsport, Pennsylvania on Oct. 30, 2008, just five days before the US Presidential election. The Alaskan Governor was vying for the office of Vice President of the United States of America.

This was captured “hand-held” with a Canon EOS 10D with 350mm f/3.5-5.6L lens at at maximum zoom length of 350mm. The aperture was f/6.7 at 1/125 second shutter speed, no flash.

Hello, My name is Gene. I live in the Susquehanna river valley (West Branch), in the mountains of north central Pennsylvania. I strive to produce photographic images that are simply “true” to the subject, usually with minimal post processing. If something is beautiful or interesting enough to deserve a viewer’s attention, it justifies being captured just as it is …or as close to reality as possible.

I can almost see in her expression that she knew that they weren’t going to win the election. Wonderful shot. History in the making.

  • Now that you mention it, I can see that too! You have a very intuitive eye!

    Thank you,

    Gene

An excellent capture of her. I see a face of sheer determination and effort.

  • Thank you very much! She certainly had the crowd on her side at this event. It was an amazing sight to witness, twenty-thousand plus people in a small city in north central Pennsylvania, all cheering like it was a huge rock concert or something …but I think she knew it wasn’t to be…

    Best wishes,

    Gene

    Excellent portrait, Gene!

  • Thank you so much, Lori! She drew the largest crowd that had ever been assembled in Bowman Field Stadium, in it’s very long history (since 1926). It took over two hours for all of the people to get in for the rally! We had never seen anything like that in out little city before. It truly was an historic event, just a few days before the Presidential election. I was very impressed, to say the least! I took over 300 photos of her and Todd, but this was one of my favorites.

    All my best,

    Gene

I met Sarah twice. Once she had her family with her. They are very nice people. I took a lot of pictures, too. We had huge crowds as well. She is a phenomenon. x

  • She certainly got a rousing reaction when she and Todd were here in Williamsport, PA! I saw your excellent monotone photo of her. I like it a lot!

    My best,

    Gene
