Water Starved Tuscarora Falls by

Tuscarora is such a gorgeous waterfall that it can literally take your breath away. Normally, the bottom section of the falls displays a beautiful veil that sprays outward like a giant fan, demanding your attention.

During this dry autumn season, the waterfall was barely recognizable, because there was so little water running in Kitchen Creek. On this visit, the view from below the waterfall is strangely eerie, but still very beautiful, in an odd sobering way. It’s like someone had pulled the plug out of this wilderness paradise, draining most of the life-giving water away.

What was left was the damp rubble of nature’s divine choas. Fallen trees and boulders that had been washed into the bottom of the falls, over countless seasons of flowing water. Then I noticed the small pool that was directly in front of me. The water’s surface was reflecting the rich golden colors of the wonderful fall foliage that was still on the thriving trees overhead.

When I snapped this shot, I wanted to captured the mood and emotions that this unusual scene brought to my eyes, mind and heart.

Ricketts Glen is a large State Park, located in the north eastern region of Pennsylvania, USA. The nearest community to the park is Red Rock, situated at the junction state routes RT-118 and RT-487.

This photo was taken on October 4th, 2013 with a Canon EOS 5D DSLR body, fitted with a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L Zoom lens. The lens was at the 25mm focal length. The exposure was 2 seconds at f/7, ISO 100. An ND-2 Neutral Density filter was used on the lens while the camera was mounted on a Manfrotto heavy duty tripod. A remote shutter release cable was used.

Hello, My name is Gene. I live in the Susquehanna river valley (West Branch), in the mountains of north central Pennsylvania. I strive to produce photographic images that are simply “true” to the subject, usually with minimal post processing. If something is beautiful or interesting enough to deserve a viewer’s attention, it justifies being captured just as it is …or as close to reality as possible.
