Heaven's Light In Watkins Glen

A storm had just passed over Watkins Glen and the warm sun was breaking through the misty air in the glen.

Watkins Glen State Park is located in the Finger Lakes region of New York, at the southern end of Seneca Lake.

This image was captured with a Canon EOS DSLR / Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L lens. The focal length was 21mm, ISO was set at 400 with an f/8 aperture and shutter speed of 1/30 sec. The camera was mounted on a Manfrotto tripod and “joystick” ball head.

    Yes, we did, several times. My wife and I love this wonderful place and visit as often as possible. It’s always a little different every time we hike through the Glen.

    Gene, I really like this photo. These light-beam shots always look good on the camera lcd, but only a few look as “right” as this one does on the larger screen/print. On a tech note – I find this type of rock often looks over-sharpened, even with little or no sharpening. From a brief read of your profile, I suspect this photo has no sharpening? On a personal note – I was hoping Watkins Glen was perhaps in your Pennsylvania area, only to realize now it is apparently near Watkins Glen (city?) in New York. We have children living in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh area, and I am always seeking photo ops when we visit their places. Thanks, keep up the good “work.”

    Thanks! I completely agree with your “sharpening” comment. I didn’t use any PS sharpening that I can remember. I know the rock was very damp in the lower portion of the shot, and that may have caused the “over-sharpened sparkle” look.

    Watkins Glen is in the south western part of NY State, in the Finger Lakes area. It would be about a 4 hour trip from Philly. However, I assure you, it would be well worth the drive! I think it’s probably a bit closer to “The ‘Burgh”.

    Gene..WOW !! I am at the end of a long long string of kudos! And every one is so well deserved. This is a simply stunning image from every aspect. It is truly a winner and I hope that you will do something really special with it. I have a friend who has gone to Watkins Glen for many a summer and i will email this to her as I know she will love it. The light coming through the rocks is wonderful. I feel as though i am there.
