Warthog (Phacochoerus africanus) by

The adorable warthog is without doubt my favourite African wild animal. On a walking safari in 2007 I encountered them constantly. After just a few hours I was adopted by numerous mothers who even brought their babies and older juveniles to feed and sleep on the porch of our lodge in what was once called the Northern Transvaal.

This photograph is part of a series that includes wild warthog families in petting encounters with my own family, including our own young children. They are somewhat skittish and incredibly strong, so you really need to know what you’re doing when they nuzzle up to you… I grew up in Africa, so I trusted my instincts with this affectionate, close-up lady.
