Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) at Close Quarters by

Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) are very inquisitive creatures, and are known to approach humans. This one approached my open vehicle at De Wildt in South Africa in mid-2007 and I was able to take a series of close-up photographs at a range of less than 2 metres. I was not brave enough to get any closer, though I have seen Cheetah come real close, smell and even lick people – not something one’s instincts usually permit.

Thanks for the compliment to my work. I am very pleased you appreciated this image. Apart from the fact that it is a “nice picture,” it is also an image that means a lot to me: I grew up in Africa and have lived in New Zealand and Australia for the last ten years. I miss the wildlife more than anything less, and this cheetah got so close I could smell its breath. It was one of my life’s really, really magical moments.
