Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Hello Blue Cobblestone Road © by

Ahhh… the streets of Old San Juan – what a wonderful blue glow to them.

Rather than being cut from stone or cast as bricks, these cobblestones were an ingenious use of slag from Spain’s iron foundries (slag is iron waste when refined, and was usually piled in huge slagheaps at the foundries). When it was cast into blocks, the slag made long lasting cobblestones. The stones were then brought to the island as ballast in ships in the 16th century. Their blue tint gives the streets of Old San Juan a very colorful look.

Since joining RB I’ve greatly enjoyed being part of a lovely community of wonderful people. I’ve also made some new friends that I hope to meet one day in person. I have several passions/hobbies/professions (music, photography, martial arts & yes environmental engineering to name a few)! I am very blessed being able to work in all of these. Please feel free to visit & provide honest opinion on my photos as I am still learning (a day that goes by without learning anything is a wasted day).

Great image Hany, it has the look of HDR, views even more beautifully large. I love the texture of it.

  • Thank you so much John for your kind feedback – it is always truly and sincerely appreciated. Agree it has the look of HDR, but I did not venture there at all. It seems that everyone nowadays is doing the multiple exposure thing and the tonemapping and all of that good stuff – I guess I have lots of learning and catching up to do (LOL).

Your positive feedback is always appreciated John. Thank you my friend.

Wow…a lovely photo of blue cobblestones…..love the depth of blues and greens…the cracks in the cobblestones…a beautiful capturef!!!

  • Brenda – thanks again for the comment on this photo. I was just walking down one of the streets in Old San Juan and noticed these cobblestones – and they struck an image in my eyes… and I thought…. well I didn’t really think…. I just captured my feelings in a photo. Glad you liked it. On my most recent trip, I shot many of these stones in various arrangements. May be I will get a chance to post one or two more. Thanks again Brenda.

Love the colour and texture of the cobbles, the green growing in the cracks sets it off nicely.

  • Thanks Doug – appreciate this. Glad you like it. Thanks for stopping by and perusing my photos.

What a beautiful capture! Thanks for the description. I wonder if they rust at all?

  • Thank you Maree; glad you like this image. Unfortunately, yes, from what I was told, these will change colour over time and may even breakdown and start disintigrtating. Fortunately for me, it means I have to visit Old San Juan again in a few years to verify that (LOL). Thanks for your wonderful feedback.

I just love this……………is’nt it amazing how little delicate pieces of greenery attach themselves to the tiniest bit of soil to produce this wonderful image………the title is so clever……………cheers Joyce!!

  • Thank you Joyce. It is truly amazing… these blue cobblestones and these little green grasses squeezing their way in between are only one part of the many reasons I fell in love with this city. Thank you so much Joyce for your lovely, lovely comment. And I truly and sincerely appreciate all the favorites.
