The Library of Celcus is constructed of marble and decorated with figures of Eros, Nike, rosettes and garlands and reflects the characteristics of the age of Emperor Hadrian. The library was completed in 117 A.D. by Julius Aquila as a mausoleum for his father, Tiberius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus, who was a [governor] of the Asian province who’s capital was Ephesus.

Statues around the library symbolize Sophia (Wisdom), Episteme (Knowledge), Ennoia (Intelligence) and Arete (Virtue) as read from inscriptions on their bases.
