1966

If you look closely, every group with a hit song from 1966 is in this collage. How many do you remember?

This is a very nice collage but if my recollections are correct, Jimi Hendrix had his 1st hit in 1967 and Captain Beefheart never had a hit single (though he sure nuff should have!). Anyway, who really cares? It evokes the spirit of the times ,you had fun doin’ it and that’s what it was all about :)

Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band signed to A&M and released two 1966 singles, a version of Bo Diddley’s “Diddy Wah Diddy,” followed by “Moonchild,” which was written by David Gates. Both were hits in Los Angeles. The band began to play music venues catered to underground artists such as the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco.

UK success: Hendrix’s first single was a cover of “Hey Joe” & backing this first 1966 “Experience” single was Hendrix’s first songwriting effort, “Stone Free”.

I also hadn’t realised that the good Captain had a hit with Diddy Wah Diddy (great video btw), albeit just in LA. I don’t think the UK was even aware of his existence until John Peel came back from the USA and started playing him on pirate radio in 1967.

Thanks for putting the record straight (!) and my memories….
