Another quick and loose piece painted with Sennelier paints and products, this piece was a test of the company’s Prussian and Ultramarine blues with various mixes. The original is 12″×16″ in size and is painted on Sennelier 140# cold-pressed paper. The paper seems to have bit less tooth to it compared to the Arches equivalent I have been using although there is still a really nice interaction between these paints and the paper.

I am a still-life and floral watercolor artist based in the Tacoma, Washington USA area. My work can be found in collections throughout the world as well as on the set of ABC Studio’s television series, “Desperate Housewives.”

Beautiful blues, Ken. Dont like the paint product? Always love your shadows!

  • Thanks Maureen! I really like these paints and papers but they definitely behave a bit differently for me. Plenty more experimentation to do!

Beautiful painting Ken…I use a ton of different papers, and still find Arches the best, but when I want special effects like blooms and back runs etc. Sennelier is perfect…

  • Thanks Janis! I like this Sennelier paper quite a bit but am surprised how much it differs from the Arches. At this point, I think I like them both and, like you, might purpose them for different styles and techniques.

I love the contrast of reds and blues in your work. Arches is a hard product to beat, never tried Sennelier, kind of picky about paper. Would you use it again?

  • Thank you! I am definitely an Arches fan as well and still think it will be my primary paper but I find the Sennelier interesting as well. Since Sennelier sent me 3 16″×12″ blocks of 20 sheets (60 sheets total), I will have plenty of time to experiment with it and will definitely use it again. It seems not quite as coarse as the Arches and does react differently to the paint though.

Love your light and shadows. Must admit, I like Arches too. I’ve mostly been disappointed in other paper. I’m hard on paper and Arches is tough.

  • Thanks Jenny! I agree that Arches can take a beating! Sennelier sent me 60 16″×12″ sheets of their paper so I will have plenty of chances to experiment with it. Can’t wait to try the “Rough” but I do like the “Cold Press” so far. I don’t do much with “Hot Press” papers but they will be interesting to try as well. So far, the Sennelier paper seems to hold up well to repeated washes, glazing, and lifting.

I like your “quick and loose” pieces. Great variety of blues.

  • Thank you Lora! Very nice of you to say! So far I am pretty impressed with the Sennelier paints. They definitely have a different feel compared to what I currently use though. I suspect I will be using a little of everything in upcoming paintings.

a lovely work of art Ken …despite you favouring the Arches paper…the blues are very pretty with good contrasts!

  • Thanks Linda! I am going to have a lot of fun playing with the Sennelier paper as they sent me 60 12″×16″ sheets of it to try. I can see where the Sennelier paper will work well for some things while the Arches will be better for others. It will be fun to experiment!
