This quickly rendered red flower was done with very little preparation and kept very loose. I wanted to paint quickly in order to try out a new palette system I am planning to use. I believe this piece is quite unique in comparison to my other work in this series. I used Winsor & Newton and Rublev watercolor paints on Arches 140# cold-pressed paper for this. The original is 13.75″ × 10″ in size.

Featured in Water Media in February 2011.

I am a still-life and floral watercolor artist based in the Tacoma, Washington USA area. My work can be found in collections throughout the world as well as on the set of ABC Studio’s television series, “Desperate Housewives.”

The center of this one really pops & I love the red. Is this a flower you saw in Hawaii?

  • Thank you Marsha! Just a little experimentation. I saw this one in a neighbor’s garden.

I’m really liking your gray backgrounds in this series. They are so different from the usual floral backgrounds and they really do work.

  • Thank you Jenny! I am experimenting and trying to make the genre my own. Hopefully these pieces are unique.

The background draws me into this one as much as the flower Ken – such interesting texture. Looking forward to seeing more from this new palette.

  • Thank you Rebecca! I almost feel as if the background is much more interesting than the flower. Experimenting is a lot of fun!
