Thanksgiving Dahlia by Ken Powers

Thanksgiving Dahlia by

I have been so busy with preparations (cleaning the house) for the arrival of guests for our Thanksgiving holiday that I haven’t had time to paint as much as I would like. I decided I wanted to squeeze a quick, smaller-sized, floral work in to add to my series but in order to simplify it, I left the background bare. I like the way it is a contrast to some of the other florals in this series and the absence of a background left me to concentrate a bit more heavily on the flower itself. The original is 7″×10″ in size and is painted with Rublev 18th century reproduction watercolor paint and Winsor & Newton watercolor paint on Arches 140# cold-pressed paper.

Hi Ken ! We do not have this Thanksgiving here in France… When is it ? and what is it all about ???
It seems to be a big festivity for you all in the States…

  • Here is a better description than what I could ever give Corinne: Thanksgiving

At my house it is an excuse to eat a lot of turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing, and assorted side dishes and to watch American football on TV!

It’s rather nice against the white, especially as you’ve used lovely rich colours. Nice one Ken!

  • Thank you Ann! I thought about vignetting a background color or something but I just plain ran out of time!

Such gorgeous petal colours, Ken. I love the wet in wet and the curl of each petal.

  • Thank you very much! This was a fun “quickie!”

I love the colors in this – and the way they mingle together.

  • Thank you Lora! I hope I have time to paint another piece later this week but things get hectic this time of year.

There’s not a whole lot to say about this that hasn’t already been said. It’s a wonderful piece & it certainly doesn’t come across as a quickie – it’s so very well done. I especially like the hot & cold colors together & how they give such great depth & definition to the petals. Very well done.

  • Thank you Marsha! I really enjoyed this color combination!

really nice, Ken. I like the empty background, the flower is the focus and looks lovely against the white.

  • Thank you Hillie! It was a struggle to keep myself from adding a background!
