I have no idea what this flower is even though it is growing out in front of my house. On many occasions over the course of the last 10 years I have completely mowed it to the grown with my lawn mower but it still keeps coming back. The other day, since I have a new appreciation for floral painting, I noticed what an incredible flower it had on it. It was very billowy and feathery and seemed so delicate and was probably about 5 inches across. I feel a little bad for previously hacking it to the ground since it really is pretty interesting. I wanted to achieve a bit more looseness with this piece and wanted to incorporate a little more impressionist and abstractionist techniques into its rendering. The original is 10.25″×14″ in size and is painted with Rublev 18th century reproduction paint, Daniel Smith watercolor paint, and Winsor & Newton watercolor paint on Arches 140# cold-pressed paper. The texture of the paper really worked well with the coarsely grained Rublev paint to create an interesting background.
A print of this piece has been sold to ABC Studios and licensed for use on the set of “Desperate Housewives.”

This is stunning, Ken. I’m so glad I don’t have to be a judge in order to pick out my favorite as each floral is so beautiful. The colors in this one are fabulous.
You are too kind Marsha! I definitely wanted to incorporate some new ideas into this one so I wasn’t sure if I was going to like the final product!

Gorgeous work Ken ! Love the effects of this paint…
Thanks Joan! There is some fun stuff that this paint can do! It also seems to be very dynamic in terms of the room lighting the piece is viewed in which I attribute to the large pigment granule size.

Poor little thing, how could you?! this is really beautifully done Ken, you’ve achieved great colours and contrast here! Good boy!
Thanks Maree! I thought this was a weed (and maybe it is). It looks as If it was intentionally planted though. I promise to stop mowing it down every year!

I am so glad it survived your abuse long enough for you to paint it, Ken. It is gorgeous! Wonderful colours and shadow work.
Thank you very much! I don’t remember ever giving it a chance to flower over the years! This poor thing has suffered over ten years of abuse!
