This was a strange little experiment I was trying and hesitated to even post it. I was experimenting with some dark background ideas and this strange flower ended up being the subject. I need to tweak some of the ideas here still. The original is 10.25″×14″ and is painted with 18th century reproduction watercolor paint on Arches 140# cold-pressed paper. The heavy background washes really settled into the rough paper to create an unusual backdrop for this!

This is very striking in its simplicity & indeed a very different palette.

  • Marsha! Thanks, I still can’t decide if I am going to keep this one or trash it!

Don’t trash it. Crop it for excitement.

  • Maybe I could use part of it in a collage!

Nonsense. It’s a great flower, just a little overwhelmed by the background. If you’ve done a bad painting, I haven’t seen it.

  • The background was a total experiment. But, one must experiment in order to see what works or doesn’t. I will redeem myself with my next piece!

a good contrast Ken….it looks like the background has some pastel in it ….looks textured…

  • Thanks Linda! I didn’t think these paints could go that dark!
