I hadn’t painted for a while due to many family commitments but saw these skates at one of my favorite local pubs and couldn’t resist doing my rendition of them. For some reason this subject really appealed to me even though I have never been ice skating in my life. It is amazing what you can find when you are searching out a pint. The original is 10″×14″ and is painted on Arches Cold-Pressed watercolor paper using 18th century reproduction watercolor paints. The combination of paints and paper lends for interesting textures in the piece.

I am a still-life and floral watercolor artist based in the Tacoma, Washington USA area. My work can be found in collections throughout the world as well as on the set of ABC Studio’s television series, “Desperate Housewives.”

Oh this brings back the memories Ken, I used to have a pair just like these growing up in the midwest. Great work, am going to have to find out more about these paints, wonderful affects…

  • Thanks Joan! I was really drawn to these for some reason. As for these paints, I absolutely love them. I am their biggest fan! Give ’em a try!

Fantastic job! Ice skating is so much fun…if I only knew how to stop. I usually just slam into the boards and call it a day! :oD

  • Thanks Dana! That sounds about how I picture doing it! I will still have to try it sometime.

These are wonderful Ken, & your attention to detail on the skates is superb. Great job on the laces & eyelets especially. You may not have painted in a long while but you certainly didn’t forget how.

  • Thanks Marsha! This one seemed to just fall into place!
