Rusty Milk
This old milk canister had been sitting around our house for years. We had no idea what we wanted to do with it so I thought I would add it to my collection of watercolor paintings. For some reason, I had the absolute worst time trying to get the blues in this piece to scan correctly. I have always had trouble scanning the Lapis Lazuli but this one was a particular nightmare. The piece is painted with a combination of Rublev 18th century reproduction watercolor paint and Daniel Smith Primatek paints on Arches 140# cold-pressed paper. The paper and paint combinations really create some interesting textural effects. The original piece is 10.25”x14” in size.

It’s a good thing you didn’t throw this old can away – sure made a great painting. Everything from the rust on the can to the peeling paint to the shadows on the lapped siding looks great. Good job!!! I just know this one will get featured real soon.

Great job Ken. I love the verigated texture of the canister. The older the item, the more interesting it is when painted!
Ken Powers replied 26 days ago
Thanks! I really like the old textures that nature creates. It really does make objects more fun to paint that way.

Orange blue is my favorite primary set. This makes great use of them. As usual I love the shows.
Ken Powers replied 26 days ago
I am with you on that one Jenny! I am an orange and blue fan as well.

great work Ken….the colours are spot on! love the lines and shadow and of course the detail you put in your paintings is fab.
Ken Powers replied 26 days ago
Thanks Linda! I considered doing more with the foreground as well but I decided I didn’t want to detract from the subject.

Not only do I agree with what everyone else is saying, but I think another key element to your paintings is that you always eliminate the clutter & hone in on what’s important. Less is more in most cases.
Ken Powers replied 26 days ago
Thanks Marsha! Yes, I try to simplify things. With the two kids to take care of, I don’t have time to get too elaborate. Besides, I kinda like to hone in on and frame a specific subject.

Fantastic Ken! I love the subtle tones of your palette and simple and elegant forms. The everyday object becomes super-real. A great addition. Of course these milk cans in Australia are collectors items now…& very sort after….thanks for the look…Ange

Immortalized! Excellent texture and the limited, contrasting palette of pale blue and yellow/reds, enhances the rusted look, superbly.

oh,, so beautiful,, you did this old milk can justice,, you gave it new found beauty. your colors are so soft and shadows are supberb!! I bought one of these milk cans yrs. ago,, it didn’t have the lid,, for years it has sat in my garden,, this yr.. I sanded it and repainted it just to protect it,, it is done in flat black since our lawn furniture is in wrought iron,, I took the top of a bird bath with no base and put on top and created a mini rock garden in it with peat and soil and planted moss roses,, a spreading annual with mini rose flowers,, they cascaded down and really created a statement piece,, so now it has purpose and beauty,, never even got a pic of it this year,, will have to do next year.. thanks for reminding me,LOL,, THIS IS A FAV. FOR ME,,peace and love linmarie
