Artist's Description

Comet Lovejoy on December 25th 2011. Poocher Swamp, Bordertown, SA. Comet Lovejoy surprised everyone by re-appearing the other side of the sun after ‘grazing’ past it. Scientists thought it would disintegrate but it survived and turned into one of the best looking and brightest comets visible! First visible a few days before Christmas it’s not fading but still a magnificent site with it’s long double tail. The curved tail is dust and the straight tail is from ions flowing in the solar winds (which keeps it straight). I love how the backdrop glows in this image. The glow on the horizon is from lightning then there’s the glow from the clouds, stars, comet and Milky Way lighting up the sky!

Nikon D7000, Tokina 12-24mm lens. 60sec, ISO 3200, f4.
