Sadhu Painting

Sadhu Painting

This is a portrait I painted recently in Acrylics.

I am currently working on a series of portraits for an exhibition here in Bristol next year (2010). My theme is based on the diversity of cultures expressed through the local people found in Native North and South America, Africa, The Middle East and Asia.

This painting was just a practice run before I start working on the larger scale work for the exhibition. It took me between 30 & 40 hours to get it to this stage.

Although I scanned it in at 1200 dpi, the colours have all come out a bit wrong. It’s a bit over exposed (the whites aren’t that white), and the colours are a lot more vibrant in real life.

This guy is a wiseman from India, and you pronounce the name ‘Sardoo’, I think.

Sadhu Painting belongs to the following groups:

"Real" Life Artwork (No Photography), Accentuate The Eyes, Acrylic Painting, All Around the Styles, Authentic India, British Portrait Artists, Contemporary Professional Painters and Sculptors, Creative, Talented, and Unknown, Ethnic Art, Masterpiece: Art, Painters In Modern Times - TWO PER DAY, Realist Traditional Art, Strictly Human Faces , United Kingdom and Water Media (Paintings by hand only)

This is amazing and so realistic, if the rest of your portraits are of this quality you will be a large sensation for sure! Good luck.

Wow!!! Great work!!!!. I do know what you mean about the colors being different that the real painting. It’s something that I, and many others battle with quite a bit… Some paintings more than others. But this painting dose capture your awesome talent!!!!

  • PottyScotty replied

Hey Mr Branco, thanks for your comment.

I would love to get a decent digital SLR at somepoint to take photos of my work. Hopefully if I sell some paintings, I could buy one!

this is stunning. you did the metallic part of the gold so well… it looks real!

  • PottyScotty replied

    Hey Lauren, thanks for commenting.

The gold paint on his forehead was pretty tuff to get right, but I think it turned out ok.

  • Keto

Wow great job! At first, I thought it was a photograph, but I saw the word “painting” and had to check it out. You did a really great job. I’m especially impressed with the beard and the gold paint on his skin.

  • PottyScotty replied

Thanx a lot Keto. It was definately good practice.

The whites may be a little bright, but otherwise this looks like a photo for sure. Freakin’ amazing work!!!!

  • PottyScotty replied

The beard is probably the worst part of the painting. To be fare, the scan over-exposed the whites. They’re not so bright in real life, but I may add some glazes to tone it down a bit.

    Thanks for commenting MoonSpiral!

This is so real that it could be taken for a photograph. Just stunning piece of art. love the beautiful dark brown eyes the window of the sole. Congratulations on your exhibition I am sure it will be a sell out. Where are you holding your exhibiton in Bristol ?? Sandy

  • PottyScotty replied

Hi Sandy, thanks for your kind words.

I really enjoyed painting this. It was my first portrait (obviously it’s not my first painting!) so I’m pleased with the results. His eyes were definately one of the main reasons I chose the reference in the first place.

I’m not sure of the dates for the exhibition yet, but it will probably be at Centrespace (www.centrespacegallery.com) which is in Bristol City Centre. I might also be having a solo exhibition in Bristol at some point next year, and hopefully one in London (but that’s all a bit Hush-Hush at the mo!).

Some much work, so little time!

I will definately post something in the forum when it’s time to start promoting the exhibition.

    Have a good day.

  • David McMahon

A friend of mine told me I simply HAD to come and look at this painting. When I looked at the thumbnail, I thought, naaaaah, she gave me the wrong information – because I thought it was a photograph, judging by the eyes.

  • PottyScotty replied

Thanks David. I really enjoyed painting it. I can’t wait to start on the main series. I’ve got about 10 to do, and they’re all gunna be much bigger, atleast 16×20 inches. Which friend said to look at it? Tell them thanks from me would ya!

  • gingy

    gingy

i think the pix is fine…white beard and all. i think the starkness of the beard ads to the pix. it is quality work.

  • PottyScotty replied

Hey Gingy. Thanks for the comment. The beard only really looks this stark because of the terrible scan. It’s much softer in real life. Glad you like it.

  • gingy

    gingy

terrible scan? i like the way it looks right now. very imposing!

  • Petra Pinn

    Petra Pinn

wow, amazing realistic portrait, i just did a portrait of a indian woman with collage-not that realistic (no references used), love how you painted this, i haven’t neither the patience or the ability to paint like this. excellent work!

  • PottyScotty replied

Thanks a lot Petra. I think I must be the most patient man in the World cause this was 40 hours of pretty hard work! The hardest bits were actually working out what colours to mix, and also how to use my brush to get the marks that I wanted. I think it turned out OK. The beard’s a bit rubbish. I’m my own worst critic!

This is absolutely amazing!!!!!! I thought it must have been your reference photo until I studied it very closely.

  • PottyScotty replied

Hey carol, thanks for your comment.
    -
It’s funny but if I look at the reference now, my image looks nothing like the guy in the photo. Well, he does and he doesn’t. I didn’t want to copy what I saw, I just wanted to take elements from the photo which I thought were important, and ended up creating this new identity, this new person, that for all I know doesn’t actually exist! He may do but we’ll never know. Check back soon cause I’ve just started a new painting which I’m hoping will be a lot better than this. Take care!

Wonderful work Potty! – a series of these with diversity of culture as a central theme will make a memorable exhibition – make sure you let us know the dates – I’d make the trip just to see it – stunning!

  • PottyScotty replied

Hey Kafka, thanks for your kind words, that’s really appreciated. It’s a pretty exciting time for me, I can feel that my life is going to change for the better next year. Hopefully, if I sell a few paintings I’ll have more than 10 pounds a week to spend on myself, which is what it’s like at the moment!

The exhibition has changed now. Due to costs, 5 other graduates are going to show work with me, so I won’t be able to show any more than 4/5 paintings. I still want to have my own exhibition at some point but need to earn some serious cash before then.

I’ll Bubblemail everyone that’s commented on this painting and any others I do before the end of the year, when I know all the details.
    Take it easy mate!

Hello! Great piece you have here! I’m making a feature banner for the group Oh So Emotional and I was wondering if I can use your piece in it (I would not alter it in any other way than cropping it). I plan to post on the front page of the group all the names of those people that allowed me to use their works in the banner with a link back to their album. Please let me know if you wouldnt mind my using this lovely piece! Thanks!

  • PottyScotty replied

Hey Taylor. Yeah ofcourse you can use it. What do you mean by ‘crop’ though?? Do you want more of a thumbnail sized version. I could do one in Photoshop and email it to ya if you’d like, or does it have to be the same image you see here?

  • bluewhite

    bluewhite

    So lifelike! Astonishing work.

  • PottyScotty replied

Thanks a lot for all your recent comments. I wasn’t completely satisfied with this one as it was the first painting in about 8 months. But atleast I know what I’d change next time. Painting the recent birds is really helping me too. I wish I did his beard a bit more like I tackled the yellow feathers of the Tucan. It would have looked a lot softer. I’m my own worst critic!

  • Taylor Sawyer

    Taylor Sawyer

So what I am going to do is crop to just the face in a square. The feature banner will quickly flash through all the different faces that I have added to it so as to show many different emotions (and many different kinds of people as well). No need for you to do anything. I’ll be putting this image with a link back to the image and to your portfolio on the front page of the group. And I can crop the image myself if you dont mind. Thanks for allowing me to use it! :-D

  • PottyScotty replied

    No worries. Sounds good.
