THE LIFE OF A BUM

Sometimes you’re happy
sometimes you’re sad
the reality of it all
can make you so mad
as the winter chills your bones
you’re left contemplating being alone
this life on the streets
depresses the soul
as the world treats you so cold
tears fill an empty well of misery
that you sip from continually
while dwelling in memories
of the way it used to be
the joy, and laughter of family
haunts your very existence
the demon’s whispers become persistent
as if this was a part of hell
sometimes it’s hard to tell
every now, and then
god’s light shines through
reassuring me i’m human like you
the struggle continues
failure the excuse i refuse
as i sit panhandling
singing the blues
smiling, and joking as they walk by
hoping deep in my heart
this is not where i’ll die
