    G’day PoppyK,

    This has “K- U – T – E!” oozing from every pixel.
Very creative use of selective colour for this lovely reflective kiddie-by-the-sea shot.
The child’s pose make me look down as well and this means you have done a remarkable job in depicting this scene.

However there are two concerns for me:

    1. Your composition is too central and static and to me there seems to be too much “photograph” and not enough “kid/reflection”.
The only way to correct this would be to make a fairly heavy crop placing the child/reflection slightly off centre to our right as the child/reflection seems to be “leaning” to our left. An 8×10 crop would make this a standard size and create enough width to achieve this.

    2. You should have zoomed right in when making the colourization as there is a pink toe on the right boot.
You could either redo this or use the Clone Stamp in Photoshop to turn the offending area grey.

    Nicely done!

    Hi Dennis,
Many thanks for your comments and critiques,
I understand your point 1, but I really liked the fact that the shot gave you a sense of space. the child is in a daydream- a world of her own and I thought the space added to this,to show she was alone-this said, I have done some cropping and included the picture below to show my point, art is all about interpretation, and we all perceive it differently :-)

Point 2, yes you are totally right, I have re done it and sorted the boot out.

I am happy to receive comments and critiques

    G’day again PoppyK,

    Thank you for the feedback.

Creating a sense of isolation is quite OK but WHERE you place the subect is most important.
If you have made a photograph with all lines/eyes leading to the subject then having the subject central is the way to go.
But you do not have such leading lines here and centralising the subject makes the image look static and a bit ho-hum.
HOWEVER, if you place the subject towards a corner, on a “Thirds” line intersection you still achieve a sense of isolation but create a much more interesting image.

    Hi Dennis,
I have tried a different crop, what o you think?

  • Dennis Gay

    Dennis Gay

    Yup!

You could leave a bit more space at the top but I like the off centre placement.
I did not mean to steer you away from your idea of making the subject isolated so I feel you could both keep that mood but with the subject towards a corner in a larger setting.

I like the nice grey toe on the boot! ;-)

  • poppykitten replied

Hi Dennis, I dont mind being steered, critism is always good as it makes you see things in a different perspective.
and you’re right, the boot does look better.

    this is so fantastic !!

see, i liked it with the fence posts in the background though .. i think it gave it some more movement .. gave it a true essensce of the area where the pic was taken.

just my two cents worth LOL

Can I jump in here? I think Dennis was right. To me, your last crop is so much better, with the subject more to the right. I agree that a little more on top would be nice, but “as is” might be the best, as exposing the posts might be too close to the top. Also, and importantly, I think the size of the child and reflections within the frame is the best in #3. It’s a really great picture. I adore #3!!

Whatever way you crop it, I just like the idea. I like Denni’s comments on this image, he certainly presents ideas that all of us can remember when cropping our work. I’d also rotate this whole image 1degree anti-clockwise, but that could just be my eyes!
