Mighty Uluru Under Storm Cloud
!
!
!
I recieved a phone call from a friend at Uluru who told me that it was
“Raining on The Rock”
I had only ever seen it with solid blue skies after numerous visits.
I said to my wife “put on your lippy, were heading for Uluru!
We left Melbourne a few hours later, the distance from Melbourne to Uluru/Ayers Rock is 1170 miles / 2000 kilometres, we stayed one night in Burra an old copper mining town and one night in Coober Pedy where most of the worlds Opals are mined. Coober Pedy is like the wild west !
We arrived at the Uluru / Kata Tjuta National Park around 3pm after driving through wonderful torrential rain with low visibility for hours.
I dropped my wife off at the resort and drove like crazy the next 14 kilometres deep into the area where Uluru sat so majestic, it is so large that from 10 kilometres out you feel like you could almost reach out and touch it.
The rain hadn’t eased , I was shooting with Agfa Ulta Proffesional film which was only 50 ISO, so very slow with exceptionally high colour saturation.
I didn’t think I would have enough light to take a shot!
As I drove closer the rain started to ease and would you believe the sun came out, I stopped my car in a non designated area, grabbed my camera and looked through my viewfinder. I was using a Leica R8 with a 200mm lens,
It was too powerful and I had to run into a field of “Ouch” thisles behind me to get the whole of Uluru in the frame. As I walked backwards I slipped and twisted my ankle ‘Big Ouch” but I had to get the shot !!!
I finally had it all in frame ..Click.. Gotcha..click..Gotcha, then,oh no, I was out of film, couldn’t believe it !!!
I hobbled back to the car, changed the film over, looked up and the cloud was gone!!!!
I didn’t see the results for 3 weeks, had to wait till I arrived back in Melbourne to take the film to the pro lab, when I collected the proof sheet they told me I had a winner.
I was overwhelmed with the result, I don’t believe there is another image like this anywhere.
I hope you enjoy this image

!!Pastel red to burgundy and spinifex to gold,
We’ve just come out of the Mulga where the plains forever roll.
And Albert Namatjira has painted all the scenes,
And a shower has changed the lustre of our land.
And it’s raining on the Rock,
In a beautiful country,
And I’m proud to travel this big land,
As an Aborigine.
And it’s raining on the Rock
What an almighty sight to see,
And I’m wishing and I’m dreaming that you were here with me.
Everlasting daisies and a beautiful desert rose
Where does their beauty come from heaven knows.
I could ask the wedge-tail but he’s away too high,
I wonder if he understands it’s wonderful to fly.
It cannot be described with a picture,
The mesmerising colours of the Olgas.
Or the grandeur of the Rock
Uluru has power!
And it’s raining on the Rock,
In a beautiful country,
And I’m proud to travel this big land,
As an Aborigine.
And it’s raining on the Rock
What an almighty sight to see,
And I’m wishing and I’m dreaming that you were here with me.

Ronald Rockman replied
Thanks Kim, it was quite a moment in my life, I sent a 36’ x 30’ print to the elders at Uluru, I was told they had framed it and it is their office, I would like to think thats true.
I was impressed your art work Kim, the salt painting is a great work, I really appreciate it after travelling the Outback for over 35 years and seeing the naturual wonders of our beutiful land.

Your image is just incredible. I love the story you accompanied it with… I’ve only just dragged myself away from shooting on film… and I know exactly how you felt when you ran out of film.
The drive, the twisted ankle, the ouch thistles… and such a magnificent shot. Truly I’m in awe of it. Congratulations.

Steve Chapple
Absolutely perfect. A true one of shot. I doubt we mere mortals would ever be so lucky to visit and see this. The 50 iso film gives a stunning vibrancy and your story about the mad dash, the injuries, tells a story of a true photographer!!!
“To me, photography is the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event.”
Henri Cartier-Bresson
Ronald Rockman replied
Hi Steve,
Iwaited so many years to get the call that it was raining on Uluru, it really was a mad dash to get there before it stopped. I enjoyed using that 50 iso film, the deep saturated colours it gave were nothing short of amazing, I often had people ask me what filters I was using, “none I would reply, just terrific film and marvellous camera equipment”
Cartier -Bresson only shot with a Leica Rangefinder and a 50mm lens!
Thanks for your very inspiring words Steve.

Sounds like an exciting way to live, Rock – upping stakes and on your way again! I heard on the grapevine the rock may be closed to climbers one day? Good idea in my opinion. I for one wouldn’t climb it but that’s mainly because I simply wouldn’t make it to the top.
Ronald Rockman replied
Most people Rosalie take the same shot in the thousands each year of Uluru standing in front of a bland blue sky, I always searched for something different, I have some images of Uluru totally under mist in the early morning which I like very much.
Thanks for the comments.
Rock
Ronald Rockman replied
I did quite a lot of business at Uluru, I supplied the souveneir shop/cafe with embroidered and screen printed tee shirts, polo shirts, caps, jackets etc, they told me on one trip that they never disclose how many people fall and are killed up there, there are deep ravines on top and if they are sill enough to go away from the climbing chain (which they do) and fall down the ravines, they won’t risk the life of the ranges to rescue them. They should ban the climb as it against the wishes of the Elders.
sundawg7
Compliments Ron for the splendid landscape image. Love the cloud blanketing Uluru. Regards, Ron
Ronald Rockman replied
Thanks Ron, thanks for the compliment, I apprecaite that
RR
rightasrain
Gosh that’s really quite something about how many people die up there then. You’re right, you don’t hear about that. Yes they should ban climbing it – why can’t it just be enjoyed for its majesty from a distance.
