Helping those who suffered in Cyclone Yasi by Pomgonwalkabout

Posted on February 07, 2011

Now I am no David Attenborough but I reckon that crows cannot fly in a category 5 cyclone.
Regardless, as the crow flies our bathroom come makeshift bunker lay in a direct line approximately 120km east from where the other morning Cyclone Yasi crossed the coast of Far North Queensland. She wreaked absolute havoc and destruction to those people living on the coast in towns such as Cardwell, Mission Beach and Tully. Whilst we apart from frayed nerves and the odd uprooted tree almost got away Scot, free.
Did she weaken, did the eye totally collapse or did she veer south? I really do not know the answer but I shall always be extremely thankful.
I do not mind telling you it was the worse night of my life. For those hardest hit on the coast, I can only begin to imagine the horror of what you went through. Tales of noise like seven Boeing 747 Jumbo Jets queuing up over rooftops! Horrendous and terrifying.
I feel guilty that we were let off and somehow want to help. Thoughts range from giving up my job and driving to the coast and muck in.
Alas we have a mortgage and bills to pay too. Maybe we could drive to the Supermarket, fill up the Defender with a few groceries and hand them out?
Yes, it would make me better but what sort of an impact would my gestures have in the grand scheme of things?
A couple of years ago we spent a week driving along this now devastated stretch of coastline between Townsville and Cairns and saw just how beautiful it is, sigh was.
In the town of Tully one of the hardest hit towns, there is a large wooden cross right next to the sugar refinery. Written on it in poignant white letters are the words “That They All May Be One”
During our holiday I took a picture of the sign whilst taking in a panorama of the town from the top of the “Golden Gumboot”
Don’t blame my photography skills but when composing the image I artistically and intentionally cut the words Be & One from the bottom of the cross. For the life of me now, I cannot remember why, but I did.
As soon as my wireless Internet service is back up and running, (it goes off and on with the power since Yasi hit) I intend to upload the image to a site called Red Bubble.
Red Bubble is a website where photographers and artists can sell their work to anyone in the world and receive a commission from their sales.
Spread the word and buy my image. All the commission that I receive, I will donate to the appeal.
You can check with RedBubble as to how many sales have been made to make sure everything is kept above board.
Whether you purchase a card, poster, laminated print, canvas or a framed print every little sale will help.
Listen! If a bloke in England can make a million dollar webpage from selling pixels then surely the photographic community can give something back too.
Communities like Tully rely on the sugar and banana industry for their livelihood. The crops have been totally flattened so at the moment things are not looking too crash hot.

“That They All May, Rebuild and Recover” Please consider buying a copy now.
Spread the word around the world, make it viral!
Cheers Dean
