Artist's Description

“The Weeping Willow Tree”
written by my Mother, Joann Borie

As a child, I was always fascinated with the Weeping Willow Tree. In simpler days, riding through the countryside with my parents was always a magical treat. This was especially true when I saw a graceful Willow Tree, most often by a stream or pond.

As time passes, one’s life becomes mature and more complex. Yet the willow tree still remains a symbol. When adversity happens to come our way, the natural human instinct is to weep for a while. But soon, the slender, lithe branches of the Willow Tree become the arms of our Heavenly Father, our precious families, and our lifelong friends. These arms reach out to envelop us with love and compassion and heal our very being.

Perhaps long ago, you and I both knew the message of the beautiful Willow Tree. Think about it…

About 10 years ago my Mom had her second bout with cancer. This time it was breast cancer. I’ll never forget sitting by her bedside, unable to hold the tears back. However, she stoically calmed me down and told me that everything would be alright. Leave it to a Mom to do that!

After radiation and on Mother’s Day, my Mom gave both my Brother and myself a copy of this short story. I was so touched that I immediately set out to do a pastel of a Weeping Willow Tree, located in Maryland by a small Springhouse. In a week’s time it was done. Thankfully my Mom is 100% cancer free!!

This is a photograph of the original pastel that I created for my Mom and shot with a Canon 40D. She is totally right. If adversity hits, we must spread our branches out and have faith! I believe that this is how she is still cancer free!!
