Artist's Description

Pelecanus conspicillatus – Taronga Zoo, Sydney
Pelicans use their sensitive bill to locate fish in murky water. They use the hook at the end to grip slippery food and the pouch as a net.
All pelicans’ bills change colour during the breeding season. The front half of the pouch becomes salmon pink and the throat turns yellow. A black diagonal stripe appears along the bill and the top and base change to cobalt blue.
