Artist's Description

Newly emerged Four-spotted Chaser, Libellula quadrimaculata wing, head and back. On photographer’s finger. The dragonfly is newly emerged and still very weak from initial flight to tall grass. The wings are whirring at very high speed, but insect is unable to fly. This whirring, high speed flutter seems to force the development of veins in wings by pumping blood into them. The wings are still wet and sticky although formed. During this time, the dragonfly is highly vulnerable to predators. Late evening shot. I moved it to more protected spot. They hang in grass about 12-24 hours after emerging while wings gain strength to fly. Often they land in grass after emerging only for park management industrial mowers to chop them up the next morning. Tall grass about dragonfly ponds is critical for their survival.
