This is the judge’s comments regarding the image….
I love this shot. I think it is an emotive shot of an easily recognisable feature of the place where Glynn lives. The yellow sodium lights cast an eery palor over this image, and the light-trail in the background adds a sense of the passage of time. Together these things make it feel like it is late at night in a small town somewhere.
The murky yellow light and the long exposure revealing the car lights to imply the lone traffic late at night creates a most interesting mood that transforms the universal nature of the iconic gas station. I like the glimpse of the buildings across the street to give it a richer sense of being in a unique place.
I really loved this image Glynn, and I have always enjoyed your architectural images, but this one is so emotive and moody. Nice use of leading lines and perspective, and an unusual subject at an unusual time of day [night]. Loved the light trails in the background.
