Artist's Description

Gas Street Basin is located in the centre of the city of Birmingham, in the Midlands of England, and is a canal basin at the junction where the Worcester and Birmingham Canal meets the main canal of the Birmingham Canal Navigations Company.

The canals were build in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s, during the Industrial Revolution, to transport freight around the Midlands of England, but by the early 1800’s the advent of the railway made them obsolete and they fell into disrepair.

During the 1990’s much of this area was rebuilt and restored, and it is now a popular tourist attraction, with a number of places to eat, shop, and also some up-market housing.
