The Beatitudes

Life’s a
bitch at times but then it can be
rapturous. Rapture
isn’t free, it’s earned by following what is set
down in the hand-
etched and ornately illuminated
decree. Square
pegs into round
holes may fit if we
stop hammering for a minute and plane off the corners, sand them smooth, widen the hole with an auger bit then soap the hole’s inside for better slipperiness.
Then give it a
tap
and it slips in bingo just like
that.
Is this cheating? Yes, for
some but not for certain selected others such as
we.
It don’t get no better
than this, so goes
the decree.
Aye, but wait (you inter-
ject), if
life gets no better then what is
there to anticipate? What surprises
await?
Stop.
Just stop all that defeatist
talk! You errant undercooked
piece of pork
butt.
Who are we to want
surprises when in exchange for our
mere okay the joy of the
current day is ours
tomorrow and forever-
more in a world without time and
life without end amen
to that. So
shup up
or on account of your swinish skepticism it
will all be ripped and
torn away.

Dad often told me that each piece of wood is different, and the process is what we create for. The outcomes become the surprises when we see the hidden knots and grains and work with what we have been given. Maybe the trick is to see the subtle thngs as every day miracles.

  • Hey VV, I figured this poem was dark but wasn’t sure it was cabaret enough fer ya; guess it was and I sure am glad, and thankful. Your own gallery has exploded with more typically-VV roustabout glory since I last visited. Got to check in on you more often; miss too much good stuff if I don’t.
